Sacred Community Fire (New Moon)
Spring

Everything speaks to everything all the time. Even if we've forgotten the language of the wind, even if we believe the trees are mute, even if we never catch the punch lines of the crows and the squirrels strike some vague terror in our hearts, the world relates to us constantly, every being on every level alive in the moment--as we're alive, as we relate to the world whether we're aware of it or not, as we relate to each other despite our defensiveness, our isolation, the singular burdens of our lives.

The world calls to us to surrender our fears, come out of our caves, let our loads be lightened. Let the laughter cackle through our throats and the sobs well up from our bellies and the songs leap from our hearts. We're alive, early Spring we are coming out of the inner depths of Winter

This is a quote from Jonathan Merrit, a fire keeper from Portland, Oregon.

Background on the Community Fires:
In most, if not all traditions, Fire is the energy of the heart, and it is associated with such qualities as connection, community, joy, laughter, passion, and transformation. The Sacred Fire Community (SFC) consists of community fires like this in over four dozen locations around the world, hosted by firekeepers initiated in the tradition of the Huichol people of the Mexican Sierras. The Huichol people and their forebears have had an unbroken connection with sacred Fire for thousands of years through an ancient practise of offerings. Out of love and concern they have consented to sharing with us their way of connection. The intention is to create more opportunities for heart-felt connection in a time otherwise characterized by coldness: An era when disconnection from each other and nature itself is the norm. Whether you identify with any particular spiritual tradition or not, you are welcome to join us!

The Offerings:
These community fires are special in that we have been given the ritual from an intact tradition to help us create a safe, sacred space for meeting and sharing. Specific offerings are made to the fire in the tradition of the Huichol people. Making offerings to the fire is optional for those who attend. Once these offerings are made, the fire is considered "sacred" or consecrated. Sitting by a consecrated fire helps us to deepen our connection to one another, to the divine natural world.
